| The towns are interesting; the villages and hamlets,
built mostly of local stone, are attractive; the many manor houses
date from Tudor and Georgian times; many of the churches are of
architectural merit and have the handsome towers for which Somerset
is famous.
The District has excellent recreational amenities including Yeovil
Country Park, Yeovil Recreation Centre, the Octagon Theatre, Goldenstones
Leisure Centre and Ham Hill Country Park and the rivers provide
some of the best coarse fishing in England.
Located midway between the English and Bristol Channels, Somerset
covers 370 square miles populated by 142,000 people. The area is
predominantly an agricultural area with a diverse countryside of
unspoilt and well-wooded scenery. |
